Wednesday, April 18 (Herkimer) -
To our Members and friends:

We are pleased to report that the two perpetrators of the attempted robbery at our Herkimer Branch last Monday have been apprehended and arrested. A special thanks goes out to our Members and staff at the Herkimer Branch, along with our local and outside law enforcement personnel. The suspects will be arraigned in Herkimer this week.

The successful resolution of this unfortunate event was in large part due to the proper planning, training and diligence of our staff, and the tremendous understanding and cooperation of our Members. You handled a very difficult situation well, and helped ensure the safety of everyone involved. We are very proud to count you among our friends.

Thanks again for your patience and support!

Friday, March 30th (National News) -
Visa® and MasterCard® are currently investigating a possible breach of cardholder account data that involves a U.S.-based payment processor. We are aware of the situation and have been in contact with our card processor to determine if any of our cardholders were in any way impacted by the breach. As always, if we receive word that any of our cardholders’ information is compromised in connection with this or any other breach and is identified as high risk, we will contact you directly and provide you with a new Debit or Credit Card at no charge. In addition, should any fraudulent charges appear on your account, you will not be held responsible for such charges.

Though First Source continues to take steps to protect our Members’ information, awareness is often your best line of defense. We encourage all cardholders to review their credit card statements frequently to ensure that no unauthorized charges appear on their account statement. If you should notice any unauthorized charges, please call 1-800-654-7728 immediately to report those charges.

Best practices for keeping your card safe

Unauthorized credit card activity and other criminal acts of fraud are an unfortunate reality today. Despite the numerous technology safeguards, monitoring and advanced tracking systems, you should always be aware of your credit card account transactions. Below are some helpful measures you can take and resources available to help you protect and minimize the effects of fraud:
  • Monitor your accounts regularly, checking for unauthorized transactions.
  • Be conscious of all the information you share online. Even non-financial information can be enough to allow thieves to steal your identity.
  • If certain bills do not arrive on time, this may be a sign your information is at risk. Go paperless whenever possible.
  • Keep an eye out for credit cards you didn’t apply for, denials of credit cards for no apparent reason, or calls/letters from debt collectors or businesses for goods or services that you did not receive.
  • Never provide sensitive information to unsolicited requests. Most financial institutions will not proactively solicit any personal information or card information.
  • Review your credit report.
  • Periodically contact your bank to inquire about possible fraudulent activity to be aware of.
  • Consider using identity theft protection, including services that include fraud alerts and credit freezes.
To place a fraud alert on your credit report, you’ll need to contact all three credit bureaus individually:
